Vist by Dave Selby, PBO Columnist

Members and Visitors to our meeting to hear Dave Selby, columnist in Practical Boat Owner, talk about “Marlin’s Mission” were not disappointed.  All agreed that this was a most interesting and entertaining evening although it was disappointing that Bart, Dave’s companion on his mission, was unable to come!

Dave completed his Mission to sail his 18 ft Sailfish from Maldon Town Quay to Southampton in time to display his boat and host a series of talks at the Annual Boat Show.  Here Dave hoped to raise funds for the GAIN Charity which funds research into his condition, Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

We heard of his successes and the challenges he faced on his voyage, including a stay in hospital for treatment.

In his talk Dave demonstrated that it is a myth that sailing is expensive.  He illustrated for us how to look for one of the ever-growing fleet of small, second-hand fibre-glass boats which are getting cheaper all the time and get sailing on a modest budget.

A most successful evening!
